Li Cheng-yuan redeems a sick courtesan Hung Mei from a famous brothel at Fatshan, Canton. A delivery boy Wen Tsai from the local wine shop, who accidentally saw the couple together, returns one day to find Hung dead. Li, suspected of raping her corpse, is held in custody in an asylum for two years. Two years later, another female corpse, which is later traced back to the same brothel, is found raped in San Yuan Lane, Canton. Inspector Chang, aided by Public Security Bureau Chief Liu there, investigates the case. A constable examining Li’s deserted mansion stumbles on something mysterious, and is stabbed by a person claiming to be Li. Liu and Chang rush to the scene, and find the corpse of Hsiao Tsui, another courtesan of the brothel. Li is reportedly now in business after selling all his valuables since his discharge from the asylum. Chang questions gang boss Hu Su-chu, lover and backer of brothel proprietress Lan Ku, but he claims not to know Li and to have separated from Lan. Chang tells Hu that Li has a motive: he suspects Lan has cheated Li out of much money. He later asks Lan for a share of her gain, but Lan denies it all. He is subsequently found murdered in his car. Lan wants to wind up her business affected by the tragedies, but Chang posts disguised policemen in the brothel to trap the corpse-rapist. They later find Lan Ku, face mutilated, lying in a pool of blood. Sensing something fishy, the Inspector pretends to leave with some of his men. They spy on Lan and see her getting a leather case from underneath her bed and leaving. Lan enters Li’s mansion, obviously looking for someone. She is stabbed and her case snatched. Chang fires at the attacker, and the case breaks open revealing money. But the man is clearly not Li Cheng-yuan. Who is the corpse-rapist?
