In the early part of the Ching Dynasty, young Kang Hsi (Derek Yee) ascends the throne. He turns down the Queen-Mother’s (Tanny Tien Ni) decision to adopt Na Lan Hsiu-chi’s (Lo Lieh) daughter Chiung-yao (Joey Wang Jo-yin) as the Royal concubine, while she leaves home disguised as a man. Tired of the deary palace life, Kang Hsi tours Kiangnan incognito, accompanied by Chi Hsiao-tung (Tung Piao) and Wei Shao-pao (Wang Yu). He helps a young man Wang Yao solve a minor dispute with an inn owner. Wang becomes Kang Hsi’s friend and joins the trio on the tour. The party witness a prisoner executed crying innocence and a young man Sung Jen (Liu Shao-chun) volunteering to take his place. Finding something suspicious, the liege orders Wei to investigate the case and helps reverse a grievous case. On interrogation, Kang Hsi learns a fortune-teller Chin Tiao-tung (Liang Chia-jen) has been responsible for Sung Jen’s attempted suicide. He also discovers Sung Jen has the same birthday as his and questions the fortune-teller, who explains that Sung Jen born in the South is doomed to poverty but Kang Hsi born in the North is fated to a life of wealth and honor. Trying to contradict the seer’s divination, the Emperor arranges for Sung Jen to marry a rich magistrate’s daughter, but fate eventually makes him the husband of the Kiangnan Beggar Clan’s daughter. Chin and Wang Yao are worshipping in a temple when a general’s (Ku Feng) termagant daughter (Ai Ti) happens to be there. Impressed by Wang’s good look, she abducts him and forces him to marry her. Wei demands his release with an imperial order, but the general openly defied it against an award from the late Emperor. Kang Hsi ingeniously forces him into releasing Wang Yao and orders Wei to marry her.
