Glamorous dramatic actress, Ko I-ching (Lily Ho) is one of the idols in an itinerant stage show which tours Central China. The show manager, Wang naturally treats her well. The troupe travels about on a boat owned by To Pai (Ku Feng), who is a smuggler in disguise. A young rustic, Chou Yeh-chuang, alias Yeh Chuang Tzu (Danny Lee) is a member of the boat crew, and he works unwittingly for the smuggler.
Yeh Chuang Tzu and Ko I-ching fall in love, and cunning To Pai helps them to the altar against her mother's wishes. While Yeh Chuang Tzu is gone, on an errand, his wife transfers her affections to a wealthy playboy called Liu Ta Shao Yeh. In desperation, heartbroken Yeh Chuang Tzu accepts more risky work from the smuggler on lucrative terms. Later on, the smuggling ring is broken by the police, who arrest Yeh Chuang Tzu, and send him to jail. Meanwhile, Liu Ta Shao Yeh loses his fortune in the stock markets, and so he cannot afford to continue keeping Ko I-ching, who subsequently leaves him to become To Pai's mistress. After Yeh Chuang Tzu is released from prison, he is shocked to see her living with the smuggler in his palatial mansion in Shanghai. The sight is too much for the disillusioned exprisoner, who consequently goes back to his own village, after spurning To Pai's offer to reunite him with the Girl.
