Famed swordsman Ting Meng-hao has no peer until the day he meets a monk who defeats him and makes him his disciple. After three years, Ting resumes his old way of life and is provoked into a duel with Golden Sword gang member Pi Chen-wen, whom he kills. The remorseful Ting retires to Liu Manor to work as a mason for Liu Ta-hu.When Liu Manor is attacked by bandits, the villagers think Ting is somehow involved. Hsiao-ching, daughter of the manor’s owner, persuades the angry knight not to leave the place. Pi Shao-tang, leader of the Golden Sword gang, confronts Ting to avenge his slain son Pi Chen-wen. When Ting explains that he’s given up dueling, the cruel Pi nonetheless attacks him. With Ting’s life in the balance, Chiu Yi-hsing appears and saves him. But Chiu in turn challenges Ting upon learning his identity. Ting is still reluctant to fight but is forced to take action when Chiu destroys his shop and abducts Hsiao-ching. In the evening duel, no spectators are permitted. With the fight over, they dash to the scene of the clash to find both swordsmen lying in a pool of blood. Chiu is slain in the encounter but Ting is merely wounded and leaves to join his sweetheart Hsiao-ching, away from knights only too eager to challenge his reputation.
